Smarter Balanced Consortium.pngThe SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium’s (SBAC) vision for a new generation assessment system—one that includes a set of balanced components that can be adapted to meet students’ needs across participating States—is rooted in a concern for the valid, reliable, and fair assessment of the deep disciplinary understanding and higher-order thinking skills that are increasingly demanded by a knowledge-based global economy. This vision also is based on the belief that assessment must support ongoing improvements in instruction and promote meaningful learning experiences for students that lead to outcomes valued by all stakeholders.

The overarching goal of the SBAC is to ensure that all students leave high school prepared for postsecondary success in college or a career through a planned sequence of educational experiences and opportunities. To meet this goal, with support from institutions of higher education (IHEs) and workplace representatives, the Consortium will build upon the strong foundation in each participating State to create a high-quality, balanced multi-state assessment system based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

The comprehensive assessment system proposed by the Consortium calls for strategic use of a variety of item types and performance events to measure the full range of the CCSS and to ensure accurate assessment of all students, including students with disabilities, English learners, and low and high-performing students.

SBAC will be administered on computers to students in grades 3-11. The State will not release student scores or data from this field test. The purpose of the field test is to “test the test.” We are working closely with District personnel to prepare for this field test. More information, including the dates of the test at Montebello Park Elementary will be shared as soon as it is available.

MPE encourages you to familiarize yourself and child with the test itself by exploring the Smarter Balanced Practice Tests. Practice Tests are available in English-Language Arts and Mathematics. The following Practice Tests provide a preview of the Smarter Balanced assessment, but do not reflect the full range of content that students may encounter on the actual assessment day.
